A Queen, a knight, a wench or two (or a few hundred) and some miscellaneous fairies, pixies, witches and warlocks equal a jolly good time. A couple weekends ago I had the chance to revisit the good ole days at the Renaissance Fair in Irwindale, CA.
It was a hoot! I attended a Renaissance Fair many years ago, but the only people in costume were the vendors and employees. But that’s not how they do it in Cali, probably 80% of the guests were in costume. Sadly, I was one of the boring guests in capris. But I enjoyed seeing others dress-up to drink ale and eat Flintstone-sized turkey legs.
The Queen and her entourage parade throughout the park on regular “beer runs”. Somehow I have a hard time imagining Queen Elizabeth chugging a beer.
We attended the joust where unfortunately our knight had a poor showing. We had a couple of young bloodthirsty boys seated behind us who kept yelling “EPIC FAIL” throughout the battle. After having “EPIC FAIL” bellowed into my ear drums repeatedly I have decided to make it my new catchphrase.
The people watching, as always, was tremendous, particularly since so many people were dressed up. It definitely made it entertaining, and some spent countless hours making their costumes, including the barbarians in the picture below. Now that’s dedication!
The girl with the braid sticking up from the top of her head was part of the entertainment troupe. She was hilarious, and we had an energetic group who played along well with her show.
It was fun to revisit the past and enjoy an ale or two. And then return to our motorized vehicles and homes with indoor plumbing and electricity.
