I‘ve decided I need to keep my big trap shut. Or start saying things like “I am going to win the lottery” or something similar. After I shared my disappointment in sleeping through the earthquake we experienced a few weeks ago, we had another last Friday. This one I felt.
I was watching Star Trek (the JJ Abrams reboot. I just can’t handle the Shatner versions. Sorry to you purists.) and MaxE was napping in the bedroom when the earth began to move. It was the typical swaying, rolling motion, and my dishes began to shake, which was a first for me. Fortunately, no damage where I lived.
After the earth stopped moving, I ran to check on Max who was still napping on the bench in my bedroom. I sat next to him and told him it was going to be okay, probably more for my benefit than his. 🙂 Mama was feeling mildly hysterical. It’s been a long time since I felt the earth move! We had another aftershock, but Max seemed unconcerned, so I decided to be unconcerned as well.
It’s probably not the wisest to base my response on my cat, but animals always seem to know when something is up with Mother Nature. And honestly, the news acted like it was the “big one” so I really don’t think they were any more helpful. They probably just scared people.
Since moving to California, I’ve been in a handful of earthquakes. All have been minor and happened while I’ve been at home or work, but the strangest place I’ve ever experienced an earthquake was in the shower. As soon it was over, I hopped out and got dressed ASAP. With my luck, I figured the floor would open up and I’d land in my neighbor’s apartment buck naked. I guess that is one way to meet your neighbors. 🙂
Otherwise it was a pretty quiet weekend, minus the occasional aftershock. I caught another stupid cold and my throat is really raw, which makes me exceptionally whiny. If you have any good home remedies to soothe an aching throat, please share! Max has been feeling awfully neglected, which just makes him more mischievous. It’s a good thing I adore him.
I’m sorry that I haven’t been reading any blogs lately. Right now, I’m in a bit of a NyQuil induced haze. Hopefully, in the next day or two, I’ll be back at full speed. Okay, half-speed. Okay, actually remember my name. 🙂
LOL, we watch the original Star Trek every Saturday night, as hubby and our oldest LOVE it. Man, is it cheesy! You know, you’re right about animals. Whenever there’s a threat of bad weather, we always look to our animals as well. They seem to be a lot more in tune with weather stuff than we are. Glad you are okay, Tanya – that earthquake thing really sounds freaky.
Oh man, I don’t know you bear it, Laurie. The original was so cheesy but is obviously beloved. It’s probably one of the reasons I don’t mind the reboots because I had such low expectations, LOL! Animals do really seem in tune with Mother Nature. During the bigger aftershock, Max never even woke up. 🙂 And cats are light sleepers! Earthquakes do feel weird because they don’t last long (which is good) so by the time you figure out what’s happening, it’s over. Fortunately I’ve never been in a major one or near an epicenter, which I’m sure feels differently.
I heard about the earthquake on the news. They also claimed there were 100 aftershocks.
Your shower story is quite funny.
The only time I felt an earthquake was back in college. One day at lunch a group of use were sitting in the cafeteria playing cards and things started to move. It was over quickly but it is the strangest feeling and right away you feel like you were the only one that felt it so of course everyone looks at each other with this big question mark, like what the heck…. Later we heard on the news that it was indeed an earthquake.
Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Our friend Corinne wrote a post today about sore throat remedies. Here you go: http://www.oneincomelife.com/natural-remedies-sore-throats/ Hope you feel better soon Tanya!!
I heard that too, Sicorra. I felt a few aftershocks but definitely not 100. I don’t live that close to the epicenter so that’s probably why. I laugh now about the shower earthquake incident but at the time I was freaked out! First, because you’re always surprised when it happens and second, I worried that I might lose my balance and fall. All I can imagine was falling buck naked into my apartment below me. LOL!
Your reaction to your first earthquake was the same as mine. It happened in California but before I moved here. I was attending a meeting and Shannon (yes, that one) was sitting across from me and she kept saying “It’s okay”. I’m like what’s going on? The sconces are shaking, lights are flickering. Ding, ding, ding! This is an earthquake. 🙂
Thanks for the head’s up on Corinne’s post. I’m going over to check it out because I’m tired of this darn cold. GRRRRR! It’s Spring. Colds shouldn’t happen now! I’m pretty sure it’s a rule somewhere!
