One thing food bloggers often do is make grandiose claims, like “this is the best … ever!” I laugh whenever I read such a claim and not because I don’t believe them. I do believe them because I mean it every time I say it too. It’s just sometimes we end up eating our words when we find something else that is “the best ever”. So with cautious optimism, I boldly state this is the best ham ever! By golly, I mean it too!
Last year I shared a wonderful ham recipe and claimed it to be the best ever. I actually stand by the method of cooking the ham to be the “best ever” but I find this glaze to be far superior to the coca-cola sauce I made for the other ham. The glaze beautifully coats the ham with a light, sweet, but not too sweet, sauce. It tasted amazing, truly one of the best things I’ve ever made.
I literally made yum yum sounds when I ate this.
Max was not impressed by my manners as he gave me cat side-eye while I ate my dinner. Personally, I think he was just jealous. He doesn’t make yum yum sounds while he eats!
Again, this method of cooking ham is unusual but results in an incredibly tender and moist ham. The ham pretty much falls apart because it is so tender, like pulled pork, so you won’t end up with nice, thick slices. However, tender morsels versus slices is definitely not a deal breaker to me when the end result is so succulent and tasty.
Because it does cook in a water/vinegar mixture, the ham does have an initial vinegary bite, which doesn’t bother me. But even if you are concerned about that, don’t worry. Once you coat it with the sweet glaze, it will be heaven on a plate.
This dish is perfect for company because you cook the ham the day prior (your house will initially take on a vinegary smell), to serving, making it the perfect dish for Easter. You can even whip up the glaze the day before, so all you need to do is combine the ham and glaze and reheat in the oven or slow cooker. Easy peasy.
This is pretty much the only way I cook a bone-in ham. It turns out every single time and is truly easy to make too. Enjoy!
