I love spas. I love, love, LOVE them. They are my guilty pleasure and a true indulgence. Sadly, they are also not very pocket-book friendly at the moment but that doesn’t mean I can’t find a budget-friendly way to pamper myself. My skin and hair has been extra thirsty lately, so I took that as a personal challenge to find a way to restore some much needed moisture to both without spending a fortune.
While admittedly my first choice would have been to book a day at my favorite spa, I needed to find an inexpensive alternative. I’ve been doing a lot of research on DIY or natural treatments for both hair and skin, so I decided this weekend to experiment on me, the very best guinea pig.
Sadly, MaxE was uninterested in a day of pampering with me. 🙂
In fact, he was a little irritated with my sudden obsession to brush him and see how much of his fur I could yank … I mean gently comb out. For the record, it was a lot.
But I digress. Max’s fur is pretty soft. My hair and skin were not, which seems a bit unfair to me. I felt my best option to fix this unbalance was to create a mask, but not just any mask. One that I could use on both my face and hair because:
A) I’m a multi-tasker
B) I’m lazy
This mask is super easy to whip up. If you don’t have all the ingredients on hand, you can easily pick them up at your favorite grocery store. No weird ingredients or anything. Just natural ingredients that nourish your dry, flaky skin and hair.
TMI? Too bad. My skin feels like sandpaper and itches. No fun!
Avocado Face Mask
Creamy and cool, this mask will restore moisture to your dry skin and hair.
- 1/2 small avocado
- 2 teaspoons plain greek yogurt
- 1 Tablespoon honey
Blend or mash the ingredients together until smooth.
For Hair: Massage about 3/4 of the mask onto damp hair, paying careful attention to your scalp. Cover with shower cap. Leave on for 15 minutes. Shampoo and condition as normal.
For Face: Spread remaining mask over face, avoiding eye area, in a thick layer. Leave on for 15 minutes. Gently remove with lukewarm water. Moisturize as normal.
The Verdict
Wonderful. It really made a difference as every ingredient provides a specific benefit.
- Avocado is full of vitamin E, which is essential to healthy skin. It softens and moistures dry skin. It also hydrates the scalp and locks moisture in.
- Honey is a great moisturizer and anti-aging agent. It helps skin retain moisture and remain supple. It helps cure dry scalp and turn dry and dull-looking hair into shiny, lustrous locks.
- Yogurt helps remove dead skin cells, smooths out fine lines, tightens pores and hydrates dry skin. Make sure you use plain yogurt (flavored can have ingredients that irritate skin) and use full-fat as it provides the best results. It also helps promote hair growth and strengths hair.
This mask is also inexpensive and all natural. If you are concerned about a reaction to any of the ingredients, please test on a small patch of skin on your arm first. Unless you have a known allergy to any of the listed ingredients, it shouldn’t be a problem, but play it safe if you have concerns. Some people have ultra sensitive skin.
If you’re suffering from dry hair or skin, I highly recommend this simple mask.
